Tree Pose: A Beginner’s Guide to Balance in Yoga

Over the past several weeks, we’ve been moving through the 12 foundational yoga poses every yogi should know. From the strength and control of Chaturanga to the openness of Upward-Facing Dog, each posture has added a new layer to your practice.

This week, we shift into a pose that challenges not just the body, but the mind: Tree Pose (Vrksasana).

At Southern Om Hot Yoga, Tree Pose is a moment in class where everything slows down. It’s an opportunity to practice balance, focus, and steady awareness — even when things feel a little wobbly.

What Is Tree Pose?

Tree Pose is a standing balance where one foot roots into the ground while the other presses into the inner leg. The hands can come to heart center or reach overhead like branches extending toward the sky.

Inspired by the steadiness of a tree, this pose represents grounded strength and upward growth.

While it may look calm and composed, Tree Pose requires a dynamic balance of stability, strength, and concentration.

Why Tree Pose Matters

Balancing poses like Tree offer benefits that go far beyond the physical.

Improved Balance and Stability

Tree Pose strengthens the muscles in the feet, ankles, and legs, helping you build a more stable foundation.

Increased Focus and Concentration

Balancing requires your full attention. When your mind wanders, the body often follows. This makes Tree Pose a powerful practice for mental clarity.

Strength in the Legs and Core

Standing on one leg activates stabilizing muscles that support both posture and movement.

Mind-Body Connection

Tree Pose teaches you to stay present. Each small adjustment helps you tune into your body in real time.

How to Practice Tree Pose

Finding your balance starts with a strong foundation.

Try these cues:

• Stand tall in Mountain Pose
• Shift your weight into one foot
• Place the sole of your opposite foot on your inner ankle, calf, or thigh (avoid the knee)
• Press your foot and leg gently into each other for stability
• Bring your hands to heart center or extend them overhead
• Keep your gaze steady on a fixed point (your drishti)

Helpful tip:
Your drishti, or focal point, is key. Find something still in front of you and let your gaze rest there to help steady your balance.

Tree Pose in a Hot Yoga Practice

In a heated class, balancing poses can feel more challenging — and more rewarding.

At Southern Om Hot Yoga, Tree Pose invites you to slow down, breathe, and find steadiness even as your body warms and muscles fatigue.

In the heat, Tree Pose helps you:

• Strengthen focus and concentration
• Build stability in the lower body
• Stay calm and present through challenge
• Develop patience with yourself

It’s a reminder that balance isn’t about being perfectly still — it’s about how you respond when you start to sway.

The Energy of Tree Pose

Each pose in this series carries its own unique energy. Tree Pose represents grounding, patience, and growth.

Like a tree, you root down through your foundation while reaching upward with intention. There’s both strength and softness here — a willingness to stay steady while allowing for movement.

It teaches you that even when you wobble, you can return to center.

As we continue exploring the 12 foundational poses, each posture expands your awareness in a new way. Upward-Facing Dog opened the front body, while Tree Pose brings you into balance and focus.

If you’re ready to explore this posture and deepen your practice, join us for a class at Southern Om Hot Yoga. Our teachers are here to support you as you build strength, stability, and confidence on the mat.

Stay tuned for next week’s post as we continue the series with another foundational pose that blends strength, balance, and grace.

See you at the studio!
