Upward-Facing Dog: Opening the Heart and Strengthening the Spine
We’ve been moving through the 12 foundational yoga poses every yogi should know in a 12 part blog series. From the strength and control of Chaturanga to the stability built in Plank Pose, each posture plays an important role in creating a balanced practice.
This week, we shift into a pose that brings openness, energy, and expansion to the body: Upward-Facing Dog (Urdhva Mukha Svanasana).
At Southern Om Hot Yoga, Upward-Facing Dog is a familiar part of many flows. It’s a powerful heart-opening backbend that strengthens the spine while offering a much-needed counterbalance to the forward-folding patterns of daily life.
What Is Upward-Facing Dog?
Upward-Facing Dog is a backbend where the chest lifts forward and up while the legs remain active and lifted off the mat. The tops of the feet press down, the arms straighten, and the shoulders stack over the wrists.
Unlike Cobra Pose, the thighs lift away from the floor, creating a deeper engagement through the legs and core.
This posture creates a strong sense of lift, openness, and expansion through the front body.
Why Upward-Facing Dog Matters
In a world where we spend so much time sitting, driving, and looking down at screens, Upward-Facing Dog offers a powerful reset.
Counteracting Desk Posture
Many daily habits round the shoulders and collapse the chest. This pose opens the front body, helping to reverse that pattern.
Strengthening the Spine
Upward Dog builds strength in the back muscles that support your spine, improving posture and resilience.
Heart Opening
By expanding the chest and shoulders, the pose encourages deeper breathing and a sense of openness — both physically and energetically.
Full-Body Engagement
Although it feels expansive, the pose requires strength through the arms, legs, and core to stay supported and stable.
How to Practice Upward-Facing Dog
Proper alignment helps you experience the benefits of this pose while protecting your lower back.
Try these cues:
• Start lying face down or transition from Chaturanga
• Press firmly into your palms and the tops of your feet
• Straighten your arms as you lift your chest forward and up
• Lift your thighs off the mat by engaging your legs
• Draw your shoulders back and down, away from your ears
• Keep a slight engagement in your core to support the lower back
• Gaze forward or slightly upward without compressing the neck
Helpful tip:
Think of pulling your chest through your arms rather than just pushing up — this creates more length in the spine.
Upward-Facing Dog in a Hot Yoga Practice
In a heated class, Upward-Facing Dog can feel especially expansive as the warmth allows the body to open more fully.
At Southern Om Hot Yoga, this pose is often paired with Chaturanga and Downward Dog in a vinyasa sequence.
In the heat, it helps you:
• Open the chest and shoulders more deeply
• Build strength in the spine and upper body
• Balance out forward folds and hip-heavy movements
• Connect breath with expansive movement
It’s a posture that brings both energy and lightness into your practice.
The Energy of Upward-Facing Dog
Each pose in this series carries a unique energy. Upward-Facing Dog represents openness, expansion, and vitality.
It encourages you to move out of collapsed patterns — physically and mentally — and step into a more open, supported posture.
There’s a sense of uplift in this pose that can shift not just how your body feels, but how you carry yourself throughout your day.
Stay tuned for next week’s post as we continue the series with another foundational pose that brings balance and focus to your practice.
